PETITION TO DISCONTINUANCE OF INMATE WORK RELEASE PROGRAM DURING SCHOOL HOURS

This petition is addressed to Sulphur School Board and Sulphur Sherriff's Department
Eligible Signatories: anyone concerned about topic

To the Sulphur Public Schools System Board of Education and the Murray County Sherriff’s Department,

We, the undersigned concerned citizens, are asking for your immediate attention and action concerning the use of inmates on our school grounds during school hours. We understand that the use of this program is beneficial to our community and to our school system in a monetary way, however we disagree with the implementation of this program while our children are on school property. We are concerned with the use of inmates within close proximity of our children. We are concerned about the inmates past criminal histories. We understand that the present convictions of the inmates taking part in this program is the only deciding factor in their ability to participate. Their past criminal history is not taken into account. We disagree with this process. We are truly concerned for the negative impact of their presence around our children.
We are requesting that this program continue to be utilized, however not during the hours of operation of our school systems. The tasks that the inmates perform could easily be done after school hours, during weekends, and on days that the school is closed for holidays, parent/teacher conferences, etc. We would greatly appreciate immediate action on this matter.

Sincerely,
Lanissa Huckabaa (author of petition) and the undersigned
